Presents from the Past | Traditional Singaporean Games

Problem

The decline in traditional Singaporean games among the new generations deprives them of opportunities for creativity, imagination and social interactions through play.
Research Insights

The younger generations prefer digital play and electronic devices over traditional Singaporean games. There is also little education of these traditional games, as well as opportunities to play.

Immersive experience zones

There are various traditional Singaporean games sectioned into different zones for young families to explore and discover. The games for visitors to explore are Five Stones, Congkak, Hopscotch and Bug Fight. This consists of a combination of indoor and outdoor traditional games and past times. There are interactive screens at the different zones to engage young families in their discovery and learning of traditional Singaporean games.
Digital Interactions
Congkak

In this zone, there are physical Congkak boards placed on the tables. Projection mapping is used to display the digital screens and interactions on the table. At each table, two players are required to play the game.

There are two parts in this zone. The first part requires both players to dig through the sand for shells or seeds which are traditional game pieces for Congkak. The second part is the actual gameplay with real time guidance to help players participate in the game effectively and efficiently.

Five Stones

In this zone, there are digital kiosks for the visitors to customise and make their own set of five stones digitally and play with them afterwards by following along a step by step tutorial.

Similar to the first zone, there are two parts in this zone. The first part requires players to find different materials around the kampong house to build their own set of five stones. These materials include fabric swatches attached to the curtains and table cloth, and fillings such as beans and rice. The second part allows players to play five stones with tutorials for players to follow along. There three different levels of difficulty to choose from to ensure that even beginners and young children can play the game.

Players are to stand on the footprints stuck on the ground in front of the digital screens. Then, there will be instructions for them to follow along to.

The second station allows the visitors to customise and draw their own hopscotch on the digital screen. Afterwards, they can project their hopscotch on the playing area and play on their own hopscotch.
